IV World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly

In his message for the IV World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly to be celebrated this July 28, 2024, Pope Francis calls on the Christian community to fight against the abandonment and discarding of the elderly. The Pope highlights the loneliness and suffering that many older people experience due to causes such as migration, war, age discrimination and individualistic culture. Francisco invites us to follow the example of Ruth, who challenged social conventions by staying at the side of the elderly Noemí, demonstrating that accompaniment and solidarity are possible, even in situations of apparent abandonment.

Cáritas in Latin America and the Caribbean works actively on the issue of older adults. Thousands of its volunteers are already older adults, who contribute their time, experience and heart to help those who need it most. This dedication shows that older adults have a lot of life and a lot to contribute to society, challenging the misperception that they are a burden. Through various initiatives and programs, Cáritas strives to ensure that older adults are not forgotten and receive the support and attention they deserve.

In this context, Cáritas Chile will organize an intergenerational liturgy on July 26 at 4:00 p.m., where it is expected to bring together people of all ages to celebrate and honor grandparents and the elderly. This event will be a moment of reflection and communion, highlighting the importance of intergenerational solidarity and the wealth that each generation brings to the community. At the same time, several Caritas in the region will carry out work days focused on the well-being of older adults, addressing key issues and seeking solutions to the challenges they face.

Pope Francis emphasizes that God never abandons his children, not even in old age, and that Holy Scripture is a narrative of God's faithful love, who cares for us at every stage of life. The fear of abandonment in old age is real and is present in our society, but by accompanying the elderly, we receive many gifts and blessings. Recognizing the irreplaceable role of the elderly in the family, society and the Church deeply enriches us, and is a call to action to build a more just and supportive future for all.
