Panama begins the global climate agenda with Climate Week 2025

With the participation of international leaders, civil society organizations and representatives of faith communities, Panama hosts this week a key event in global climate action: the First Climate Week of 2025, which is celebrated from May 19 to 23.

This event, of international scope, is consolidated as a strategic space to promote concrete commitments in the face of the climate crisis. Through panels, meetings and parallel activities, the aim is to strengthen capacities, share innovative solutions and generate synergies ahead of COP30, which will take place in November in Belém do Pará, Brazil.

One of the highlights took place on Wednesday, May 21, at the Cathedral of San Lucas. There the Call to Action towards the COP30, a declaration that includes proposals and commitments to position Latin America and the Caribbean as a key region in the construction of fair and inclusive climate solutions. In addition, an ecumenical liturgy was held within the framework of Climate Week.

Likewise, as churches we must commit to dialogue with the owners of large companies that emit high levels of greenhouse gases and demand real changes.

Bishop Julio Murray, of the Anglican Church and the World Council of Churches (WCC), highlighted:

We do not want more words, we want concrete actions. Communities of faith are called to act.

María José, from ACT Alliance, in her reflection, invited us to participate in concrete actions against climate change.

Jocabed Solano, representative of Memoria Indígena and the WCC, together with Lucas D'Ávila, from Cáritas Brasileira, read the call, which invites governments to fulfill their financing promises, guarantee the full implementation of the Losses fund and Harms, accelerate a just transition away from fossil fuels, support the adaptation of communities and prioritize the voices of the most vulnerable groups in the face of climate change.

The event included the participation of international delegations, representatives of youth, indigenous peoples, religious communities and social organizations, highlighting the urgent need for a multisectoral and values-based response to one of the most pressing challenges of our time.
