More than 10 thousand Venezuelan migrants will receive protection, shelter and health from Cáritas del Perú and the US Government
“Hand in hand with migrants”, is the project carried out by Cáritas del Perú with the Cáritas Diocesanas of Chiclayo, Trujillo, Lima and Chosica, thanks to the support of the Office of Population, Refugees and Migration of the United States Department of State.
10,687 Venezuelan migrants and refugees will participate in the project, as well as Peruvian citizens from the host communities in order to promote a life dignity that guarantees their access to protection, shelter and health services, as well as reinforcing their self-sufficiency.
María Cecilia Céspedes Bustamante, project coordinator at Cáritas del Perú comments on how each of the components of the intervention will be implemented during the period from October 2022 to September 2023.
“In protection we provide legal guidance for access to immigration regularization, documentation and public services in health and education. In addition, we offer financial support and transportation subsidies to advance in legal processes, access health care, relocation to safe places in cases of violence, as well as meeting with family members and/or support network. Women and girls will receive essential hygiene items that contribute to their psychosocial and physical well-being. Training workshops on prevention and protection routes against violence against women will also be held, aimed at pastoral agents and community leaders from Venezuela. reception.
While, in shelter, it provides for the delivery of rental subsidies to migrant families and host communities so that they can access permanent accommodation solutions, as well as temporary shelter, especially for migrants in transit and with significant protection needs.
Finally, in health, psychosocial support, referral to health centers and financial assistance are provided to guarantee that project participants access health care”, clarified.
Venezuelan migrants and refugees and members of the host communities have been selected through the application of a vulnerability matrix.
It should be noted that the project's intervention strategy includes the development of community integration activities to support social cohesion between host communities, Venezuelan migrants and refugees.
