Cáritas Latin America and the Caribbean launches position document for COP30

Cáritas Latin America and the Caribbean has published its official Position Paper for the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will be held in Belém do Pará, Brazil, starting on November 10, 2025.

One month before the opening of the main summit on climate change, which will to bring together representation from more than 200 countries, the document, crucial for the organization's political impact in climate negotiations, is available in four languages: Spanish, Portuguese, English and French.

The position of Cáritas LAC emerges as a "prophetic voice" in response to the "cry of the earth and the peoples hardest hit by the socio-environmental crisis." It denounces a global economic model based on the "logic of throwaway" and unlimited growth, which has deepened social inequalities and threatens the balance of creation. Inspired by the Social Doctrine of the Church, the organization advocates for a structural transformation and a deep ecological conversion that places the person and life at the center of socio-environmental justice.

The document establishes three priority thematic areas for its impact:

  1. Loss and Damage: Caritas requires the Parties to comply with their commitments, implementing the Loss and Damage Fund with transparency, equity and accessibility, with direct dialogue with the communities on the front line of the crisis. It also calls for integrating this reality into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), including explicit recognition of economic and non-economic loss and damage.
  2. Adaptation: A renewed commitment to effective, sustainable and people-centered adaptation measures is urged, which respect the guardians of the territory and their ancestral knowledge. It underlines the need for investment in early warning systems and equitable access to international financing, prioritizing locally led approaches.
  3. Climate Financing: Cáritas calls on governments and international actors to assume their responsibility and the historical debt with the Global South. It calls for climate finance to prioritize grants over loans, ensure inclusive access, avoid compromising sovereignty and be channeled through participatory mechanisms. In addition, it advocates for the cancellation of unfair debts and innovative financial solutions.

Cáritas Latin America and the Caribbean, made up of the 21 National Cáritas of the region, reaffirms its commitment to actively participate in advocacy platforms so that global decisions are translated into concrete, fair and transformative actions in the territories, in favor of integral ecology and justice socio-environmental.
