In an effort to ensure that the global climate agenda prioritizes the most vulnerable communities, Cáritas Brasileira has presented its key demands in a position paper leading up to COP30, the next United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP) taking place in Belém do Pará, Brazil.

After a long process of consultation and collective elaboration, Cáritas emphasizes the importance of socio-environmental justice. Its position is that climate mitigation and adaptation policies must be built in a democratic and participatory manner, giving prominence to the communities directly affected.

Among the main demands of the organization, seven crucial points stand out to achieve a "just, inclusive, popular and democratic" transition:

1. Recognize the historical ecological debt of the North with the global South and lead the climate financing agenda.
2. Recognize the losses and damagegenerated by the climate emergency.
3. Assume climate shelter as a national policy issue.
4. Place social technologies and community strengthening at the center of adaptation strategies.
5. Recognize agroecology as a fundamental pillar for food sovereignty and security.
6. Integrate emissions mitigation into the rights agenda. humans and nature.
7. Lead the energy transition from a perspective of national sovereignty and climate justice.
