From October 20 to 26, 2024, Christian Modino Hok, Humanitarian Director of Caritas Internationalis, made a working visit to Cáritas Haiti. The objective was to learn more about the situation of food insecurity that exists in the country, and of internally displaced people, and to strengthen coordination between organizations working in the humanitarian response, based on EA launched and approved in 2024.

Each day was accompanied by P. Yvel Germain, National Director of Cáritas Haiti, by Damiana Lanusse, Advocacy Coordinator of Cáritas Latin America and the Caribbean, and by Cristopher Lopez, member of the CRS Enpower team.

Damiana highlights that the work days were important to consolidate objectives and learn from each other.

During his stay, Christian Modino held meetings with the Cáritas Haiti teams and some Cáritas at the diocesan level, as well as with CRS Haïti and the Haitian Episcopal Conference.

Some of the main activities and conclusions of the visit were:

• Presentation of the organizational structure and work areas of Cáritas Haiti, emphasizing the management of the response to displaced people.
• Exchange on the main challenges faced by internally displaced people in terms of social integration, access to basic resources, mental health and security.
• Meeting with Cardinal Chibly Langlois, who expressed his support for the work of Caritas Internationalis and called for greater international solidarity.
• Visit to a community where Cáritas has supported the construction of housing for families affected by the earthquake of August 14, 2021, who are now also hosting displaced people.
• Tour of the sanitation works and a health center financed by Cáritas in the diocese of Les Cayes.

As a result of the visit, Cáritas Internationalis together with CRS and the SELACC reaffirmed their commitment to continue accompanying and strengthening the humanitarian response of Caritas Haiti, particularly in relation to food insecurity and attention to migration. Likewise, the importance of coordination with the organizations and clusters present in the country to optimize the impact of the actions was highlighted.
