Solidarity in action: Cáritas México provides crucial support after Hurricane Otis
Hurricane Otis slammed into the coast of Acapulco, Mexico, on October 25, 2023, leaving a trail of destruction and desolation in its wake. The communities of Coyuca de Benítez and the La Sabana neighborhood were especially affected, facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Faced with this emergency, Cáritas Mexicana, Cáritas Acapulco and CRS immediately took action, deploying a response team to assess the needs and provide support to the affected communities.
Cáritas' work in the emergency phases is crucial in situations like this, where humanitarian aid is urgently needed. From the initial assessment of needs to the distribution of food, hygiene and shelter kits, Cáritas is committed to being present at every stage of the recovery process. In addition, we work closely with the affected communities, listening to their needs and collaborating in the search for long-term sustainable solutions.
In an act of solidarity and hope, deliveries were carried out in six communities in the aforementioned municipalities, where Efectivale cards were distributed to 350 families. These cards give families the freedom to purchase whatever they need, from medications to construction materials, at affiliated stores and supermarkets. In addition, mosquito nets were provided to prevent dengue, a crucial measure to protect public health in the midst of the crisis.
The deliveries were carried out in accordance with the Sphere manual, marking a step forward in supporting these communities after the devastating passage of Hurricane Otis. Cáritas' focus is on the most vulnerable families, such as people with disabilities, the elderly, widows and single mothers, selected with the help of community leaders and local authorities.
This joint effort was made possible thanks to funding from CRS Empower, in collaboration with Cáritas Mexicana and Cáritas Acapulco, and has been received with gratitude by the beneficiary families. In difficult times, solidarity and community support shine brightly, bringing hope and relief to those who need it most.
