Churches of the global South will present a document on climate justice to Leo XIV
Pope Leo XIV will receive in private audience the representatives of the Churches of the Global South this July 1. The meeting will address the concerns of the Church regarding the effects of the climate crisis in view of the COP30, scheduled to be held in November in Belem do Pará – Brazil.
Problems that appear described in the document “A call for climate justice and the Common Home: ecological conversion, transformation and resistance to false solutions”.
Reality that compromises
The document will be officially delivered to the Pontiff, as a result of the collective discernment between these particular Churches that evoke the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to act in communion with the mission of the universal Church.
The text analyzes the urgent warnings in the face of climate collapse that affects the most vulnerable communities in the world and in the face of which short, inadequate and debatable solutions are presented that end up adhering to the trends that deny global warming and in response to which the need arises to reinforce commitments as a Church.
It is about of a reflection, on the alternatives or paths that must lead towards a true ecological conversion, an attitude of sobriety resulting from conscience, which does not deviate from the real factors that prevent the transformation of cultural practices.
An analysis that challenges, questions and calls for action, to responsibly define what it is imperative to defend to safeguard the ecosystems and the lives of its inhabitants, proposals that strengthen the community fabric as a sign of hope.
Disseminate to think and act
After the audience with the Holy Father, the delegates of the Catholic Episcopal Conferences and Councils of Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Africa; will present the content of the message to public opinion in a press conference at 11:00 am (Rome time - 4am Bogotá) in the Press Room of the Holy See.
Attending this meeting with the international media will be Cardinals Jaime Spengler, OFM Archbishop of Porto Alegre – Brazil, president of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM) and of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), Felipe Neri Ferrao Archbishop of Gon y Daan – India and president of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC), Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, OFM Cap. Archbishop of Kinshasa – Republic of the Congo, president of the Symposium of the Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar and Dr. Emilce Cuda secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
The document will be available in Spanish, English and Portuguese and the press conference will be broadcast through the YouTube channels of Celam and Vatican News in English and Spanish.
