The Commitment of Cáritas Costa Rica: Towards Comprehensive Care for Children
Cáritas Costa Rica has been an essential pillar in the promotion of child well-being in the country. Through its Social Pastoral, it has implemented various actions focused on the integral human development of children, highlighting faith formation from children's catechism, and the creation of safe spaces for food and care. These efforts not only seek the physical well-being of minors, but also their spiritual growth, promoting values of solidarity that contribute to Costa Rican society.
In addition, Cáritas has been part of initiatives that strengthen the social well-being of the most vulnerable families. An example is its collaboration in the creation of the “Our Children are Sacred” Table, in which various religious denominations and civil organizations participate, committed to the comprehensive protection of childhood. This effort reflects Cáritas' willingness to go beyond direct assistance, getting involved in the promotion of public policies that defend the rights of minors in Costa Rica.
One of the main challenges that Cáritas faces is the high rate of child poverty in Costa Rica. According to recent data, a quarter of Costa Rican children live in poverty, and 13.5% in extreme poverty. Cáritas, aware of this reality, continues to promote social assistance initiatives, such as food distribution and care for families in extreme poverty. However, the organization recognizes the need to work in synergy with other institutions to improve the scope and effectiveness of its programs.
The document "Children and the Church in Costa Rica: A Children's Day 2024 that urges us", presented by Cáritas, stands as a valuable instrument to support diocesan Cáritas and all the work of the Church in its commitment to children. This document offers a deep reflection on current challenges and proposes strategic guidelines to strengthen pastoral and assistance actions for the benefit of children, thus allowing a more organized and effective response throughout the country.
Cáritas Costa Rica continues to be a fundamental actor in the fight to improve the living conditions of children in the country. Through its Social Pastoral, it not only offers direct assistance, but actively works to promote structural change that guarantees the rights and well-being of the little ones. The institution recognizes that, although progress has been made, the path towards comprehensive and synodal care for children in Costa Rica still requires continuous and coordinated efforts.
