"God walks with His people": the theme chosen by Pope Francis for the Day of Migrants and Refugees

The Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development announced the theme chosen by Pope Francis for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2024: “God walks with His people”. The 110th edition of the day will be on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

The Holy Father's Message focuses on the itinerant dimension of the Church, with special attention to migrant brothers and sisters, who are a contemporary icon of the church on the way out.

Pope Francis' suggestion consists of a journey that must be taken together, synodally, overcoming all obstacles and threats, to reach the true homeland. During the journey, wherever one is, it is essential to recognize the presence of God who walks with his people, assuring them guidance and protection at every step.

Therefore, the starting point is recognizing the Lord present in his people, the Emmanuel who, in each migrant, knocks on the door of our heart and offers himself for the encounter.

The regional reference for the issue of migration, Cristina dos Anjos, said that it is a joy to receive the theme of the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. "A profound and encouraging message that reaffirms the presence of God on the journey with his people, especially with migrants. For Cáritas, it is an opportunity to revive the global campaign "Share the journey", launched in 2017. As Pope Francis asks us, a journey that must be taken together."
