Hurricane Beryl is approaching Mexico with a trajectory that will impact Mexican territory twice. According to the National Meteorological Service of Mexico (SMN), Beryl will make landfall first on the Yucatan Peninsula, affecting the central-southern region of Quintana Roo as a category 1 or 2 hurricane, with winds exceeding 120 km/h. Later, it will regain strength and hit between the states of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, again as a category one hurricane.

Faced with this threat, the states of Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco and Veracruz are on high alert. Torrential rains, winds of up to 130 km/h, waves of four to six meters and possible waterspouts are expected. The Ministry of Defense has activated emergency plans, setting up 120 shelters and ensuring the supply of food rations, water and medical services.

Cáritas Mexicana is in constant communication with the Cáritas in the dioceses in the affected areas. In Quintana Roo, economic resources are being transferred to the diocese of Cancún for the acquisition of groceries and basic necessities. In Yucatán, tarps and sheets are being sent to assist 90 families previously affected by tropical storm "Alberto." In addition, emergency teams in dioceses such as Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Tapachula, Tabasco, Tehuantepec and Oaxaca are prepared to provide necessary support.

The situation is worsening due to weeks of intense rains that have already saturated the soils, increasing the risk of landslides and flooding. The most affected states, such as Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz and Chiapas, face significant vulnerability due to previous damage. Nuevo León, affected by torrential rains in June, has also issued a Declaration of Emergency due to severe damage to public infrastructure.

CRS (Catholic Relief Services) is supporting Cáritas Mexicana, providing tarps and other emergency supplies. Additionally, CRS hopes to provide support if necessary, depending on the final impact of Beryl.

Cáritas and CRS confirm their commitment to disaster preparedness and response, providing immediate and coordinated support to mitigate the effects of Hurricane Beryl on affected communities.
