In October 2023, Hurricane Otis left in its wake an emergency situation in various communities in Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez México. In response, Cáritas Mexicana, in collaboration with CRS and the Cáritas Acapulco team, has dedicated itself to providing support to affected families in the most affected neighborhoods and communities.

The initial assessment, carried out between October 28 and 31, 2023, identified priority needs in food security, water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as shelter. Based on this evaluation, 612 kits with essential supplies were delivered between November 28 and December 12, 2023 at the facilities of the El Buen Pastor seminary, Vista Hermosa neighborhood, Acapulco.

The kits delivered include basic foods with a duration of two months, supplies for cleaning and disinfection, personal hygiene items, and a water purifying filter. In addition, accommodation kits and intermediate kits were provided to repair temporary damage to roofs and mosquito nets, prioritizing the prevention of vector-borne diseases.

In collaboration with the Cáritas Acapulco team, headed by Pbro. Leonardo Morales, the steps to follow are being outlined to continue the emergency response and implement the recovery phase based on the information collected on the ground. Cáritas Mexicana reaffirms its commitment to quality and excellence in service to vulnerable communities, consolidating its position as a humanitarian reference in the region.
