Since last Tuesday, the Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA) that has hit the Valencian Community, in Spain, has caused a devastating humanitarian crisis, with more than 200 fatalities, hundreds of missing people and considerable material damage throughout the region.

Faced with this critical situation, the Cáritas network in Latin America and the Caribbean has mobilized its solidarity response. Through a letter addressed to Manuel Bretón Romero, President of Cáritas Spain, and Natalia Peiro Pérez, General Secretary, the regional representatives expressed their concern and support for the climate emergency that is hitting the Spanish territory.

"Our mother Earth acknowledges receipt of the carelessness that as humanity we have been systematically having," says the letter signed by Monsignor Gustavo Rodríguez Vega, Archbishop of Yucatán and President of Cáritas Latin America and the Caribbean, together with Nicolás Meyer, Regional Coordinator.

The letter highlights the reciprocity in fraternal cooperation that has characterized the relationship between both regions. "In our countries we have experienced emergencies of this type many times, and we have always had the support of Cáritas Española, with its fraternal and supportive arm," recalls the document, emphasizing that now is the time to repay this historic support.

The Latin American representatives also pointed out that the consequences of these climate phenomena usually impact more severely the most vulnerable populations, who "suffer the most losses and damage, having to resiliently start over again and again." once."

The Cáritas network of Latin America and the Caribbean has made all its support and experience in the management of climate emergencies available to Cáritas Spain, reaffirming its commitment to fraternal cooperation and joint work in times of crisis.
