From August 9 to 11, the headquarters of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (Celam) hosted the Latin American and Caribbean Congress of Theology in a synodal key for a synodal Church. There were approximately 200 in-person participants, from 19 countries, and 1,600 who attended remotely.

Cáritas Latin America and the Caribbean was present by its regional coordinator Nicolás Meyer, by the communicator Marcus Neto and the following members: Monsignor José Luis Azuaje Ayala and Jeanette Rincón (Cáritas Venezuela), Cristina dos Anjos (Cáritas Brasileira) and Cesar Kuzma (Theological Advisory Commission).

The Congress, which aimed to "promote greater communion on the path of Latin American and Caribbean Catholic theological reflection, at the service of a synodal Church and a creative and synodal way of doing theology", had the participation of an important group of theologians from the continent, approximately 30 Latin American synodal fathers and mothers who will participate in the second session of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in October next.

During the opening, the interventions of Monsignor Jaime Spengler, president of Celam, and Monsignor Luis Marín de San Martín, undersecretary of the Synod of Bishops, stood out, who stressed the importance of listening and dialogue in a spirit of synodality. Cáritas, as an organization committed to serving the most vulnerable throughout the region, reaffirmed its commitment to reflection and joint action in the construction of a more synodal Church that is closer to the realities of the Latin American and Caribbean people.

The presence of Cáritas at this congress underlines its essential role in strengthening the ties between theology and pastoral praxis, especially in contexts where synodality is lived from daily life and concrete service to the most needy.

The Congress featured six conferences, four panels and 33 scientific presentations, with renowned guests from all over the world, both in person and remotely.

At the end of the Congress, it was announced that the Brazilian theologian and priest Agenor Brighenti had been appointed by the Celam presidency as the new coordinator of the Celam Theological-Pastoral Team, succeeding the Argentine father Carlos María Galli, who had carried out that task for the last four years.

The Archbishop of Porto Alegre, Monsignor Jaime Spengler, president of the CNBB and Celam, welcomed the new coordinator and thanked Father Brighenti for accepting the task of leading the commission at this important historical moment. Among his responsibilities, the Brazilian will have the mission of promoting a synodal exercise of theological work in the Latin American context, as well as addressing the demands entrusted to him by Celam, the Episcopal Conferences and the theological community of Latin America and the Caribbean.
