From June 3 to 13, the United Nations (UN) meetings on climate change (SB 60) are held in Bonn, Germany, which are preparatory to the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Climate Change (COP 29), which will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024.

COP 29 aims reach various agreements related to the financing of urgent needs on issues such as adaptation, damages and losses. For this reason, the meetings in Bonn are focused on advancing towards this objective, seeking clear and effective commitments to support the communities most affected by climate change.

Cáritas Latin America and the Caribbean, with the support of CAFOD, participates in these meetings through its Advocacy coordinator, Victor Genina, who promotes key issues for the region. He is accompanied by Musamba Mubanga, coordinator of the Department of Comprehensive Human Development at Cáritas Internationalis.

Cáritas' main interest in this space is to promote a human rights approach in climate change financing mechanisms and ensure the inclusion of vulnerable groups, particularly indigenous people, in climate policies. Caritas seeks to recognize the importance of protecting and empowering these communities, ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights respected in the formulation of international strategies and policies on climate change.

In addition, the need for urgent and coordinated action is emphasized to address the loss and damage caused by climate change, promoting climate justice and equity in global responses.
