Gender violence continues to be one of the most widespread and widespread human rights violations in the world. It is estimated that, globally, almost one in three women have been victims of physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their lives. Even worse, every ten minutes, a woman or girl is killed by her partner or another family member.

That's why every year, November 25 is a day designated by the United Nations (UN) to raise global awareness of the fact that women are subject to violence around the world and that the real nature and extent of the problem is often hidden. Like every year, the International Day to End Violence against Women marks the beginning of the UN's Unite Campaign, 16 days of activism (Nov 25-Dec 10) that concludes coinciding with International Human Rights Day.

This year, the 2025 theme is "UNITE to end digital violence against women and girls" and aims mobilize all members of society: governments must end impunity through laws that criminalize it; Technology companies must guarantee the security of the platforms and eliminate harmful content; Donors must provide funding for feminist organizations to fight to eradicate this violence, and people like you must raise their voices to help survivors.

From its regional Gender Equality team, Cáritas Latin America and the Caribbean raises its voice on this date to reaffirm its commitment to the life and dignity of all women and reject all forms of violence against women and girls in our region.

November 25 – International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Cáritas Latin America and the Caribbean raises its voice, with firmness and hope, on this November 25 to reject all forms of violence against women and girls in our region. Inspired by the Magisterium of Pope Francis, we reaffirm that “all violence against women is a profanation of God” and constitutes a deep wound in the social and ecclesial body. No culture, tradition or religious interpretation can justify abuse, discrimination or domination.
Pope Francis reminds us that the dignity of women is “invulnerable” because it reflects the tender and merciful face of God. Therefore, in our communities, projects and pastoral spaces, we are committed to promoting relationships based on respect, equality and mutual recognition. We urge States, civil society and our own ecclesial communities to create safe environments where women can live free of fear and fully develop their gifts.
This is why within the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the 16 Days of Activism, we join the campaign “UNITE to end digital violence against women and girls.” This day seeks to raise awareness about gender violence and the urgency of combating it, calling on governments, technology companies and society in general to eradicate it in all its forms, including online violence.

We also call for a personal and community conversion that makes a culture of care possible. We reject the words, attitudes and practices that perpetuate machismo and exclusion. As a Cáritas family, we are committed to accompanying, protecting and empowering each woman, so that, together, we build a region where justice and peace flourish.
