Cáritas strengthens its commitment to safeguarding: A priority in training and action

Cáritas Latin America and the Caribbean, in collaboration with Cáritas Argentina, carried out in-person safeguarding training from May 7 to 10 at the Caza Nazaret facilities in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The event included the participation of the SELACC regional team, representatives of strategic axes and personnel from Cáritas Argentina and diocesan Cáritas.

During the first two days, Father Martín Cabrera Erro addressed various topics, including synodality as an ecclesial constituent element, the generation of safe spaces, the detection of risk and protection factors, as well as the dynamics and indicators of abuse of children and vulnerable adults. The importance of not clericalizing the laity or secularizing the clerics was highlighted, as well as strengthening protective factors to prevent abuse.

In the words of Father Martín, "it is essential that Cáritas addresses the issue of safeguarding, since it is part of the Church and its commitment is to create a culture of transparency, accountability and care for victims. Cáritas is committed to continuing to work on promoting safe spaces where all people feel protected and belonging to a Church that welcomes and accompanies them.".

The participation of Father Daniel Portillo and Dr. Patricia Espinoza of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors was fundamental. The importance of establishing a culture of care, good treatment and supervision within the structure of the Church to prevent abuse was emphasized.

Other topics addressed included ecclesiopathy, gray areas in issues of abuse of power, the mission of the Church in love and care, and the need to establish environments of good treatment. Cáritas Argentina presented its work on safeguarding protocols, receiving contributions and opinions from the participants.

The commitment of Cáritas in the Latin American and Caribbean region is to continue working, adapting and putting into practice the safeguard.
