Caritas Germany receives recognition from the Republic of Chile for humanitarian aid

On June 14, the president of Caritas Germany, Eva Maria Welskop-Deffaa, received the solidarity medal of the Republic of Chile at the Chilean embassy in Berlin. This recognition, granted during President Gabriel Boric's official visit to Europe, highlights Caritas Germany's cooperation and humanitarian support to the Chilean people after the 1973 coup, providing assistance to numerous refugees.

In her speech, Ms. Welskop-Deffaa highlighted the current collaboration between Caritas Germany and Cáritas Chile, focused on mitigating the impacts of climate change and preventing forest fires through community participation. Bishop Moisés Atisha and Lorenzo Figueroa, director of Cáritas Chile, expressed their gratitude, underscoring the importance of this alliance in promoting human rights and responding to socio-environmental disasters.

Both representatives highlighted how this cooperation has strengthened the well-being of vulnerable communities in Chile, generating replicable models and good practices, especially in the prevention of forest fires and other disasters. The collaboration of Caritas Germany has been essential to save lives and care for ecosystems, demonstrating a deep commitment to the dignity and well-being of the Chilean people.
